Sink your teeth into bรกnh mรฌ, Vietnam's iconic sandwich that perfectly balances French colonial influence with Vietnamese ingredients. Crisp-crusted baguettes with uniquely light interiors (thanks to rice flour) cradle savory pork, pickled vegetables, fresh herbs, and zesty condiments. Born as Saigon street food in the 1950s following French occupation, this portable feast delivers an irresistible combination of flavors and textures in every bite.
*Serving suggestion only. Hahaha! Some images, especially those that DON'T look like they were taken by a poorly trained monkey named Chef Frank, are AI generated and not the result of Frank's minimal culinary and/or photographic skills. Unless you failed the "I am not a robot" Captcha, your recipes will not look like these images!
Ingredients
4 to 6 Vietnamese baguettes โ€“ the fresher the better
1 to 1.5 lb homemade pork belly or 1 to 1.5 lb grilled pork
2-3 crunchy cucumbers (Persian cucumbers are ideal)
Vietnamese pate (optional)
Homemade Vietnamese pickles / ฤแป“ chua โ€“ as much as you'd like
1 medium yellow onion thinly sliced (optional)
8 to 12 sprigs cilantro
Maggi or soy sauce to taste
1 to 2 medium jalapeรฑos thinly sliced
freshly ground black pepper to taste

Directions
Toast baguettes to warm, but not so crispy that they fall apart when you split them.
Wash all the veggies and slice to prep.
Slicing with a mandoline will keep everything uniform.
Cut baguettes in half but leave the back part uncut so the loaf stays intact.
Add mayo and/or pate to the bottom.
Layer the meat and veggies.
Add a few shakes of Maggi or soy sauce, and a few grinds of pepper to taste.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Uncle Dave says...
A bรกnh mรฌ is Vietnamese baguette sandwich filled with meat and vegetables---pork, cilantro, cucumbers, pickled carrots and daikon---and often dressed with condiments including pรขtรฉ, red chili, and mayonnaise. The baguette first made its way to Vietnam via French occupation in the mid-19th Century, after which the bรกnh mรฌ originated as a Saigon street food in the 1950s. Its bread dough includes rice flour (originally intended as a substitute for more expensive wheat flour), which results in its fluffy center.

๐Ÿ™„ Help: Seriously? You don't need any help.
๐ŸŒ„ What's Up With The Images? Well, originally, we didn't have any pictures of the food at all. Intentionally! Because I find those sites with so many pictures that it takes forever to get through the directions to be annoying AF! I mean, seriously, if you need a picture to show you how to stir something, you shouldn't be cooking!
Then I decided to add pictures of the finished product when I remembered to take them, which isn't very often. There are a very few recipes which actually show some cooking steps, but not in the middle of the directions.
Anyway, recently I have discovered that AI can make credible images of the finished recipe. Is that right? Is it moral? Are robots taking over the world? Don't know; don't care. But I promise that unless you are a robot, your recipes won't turn out anything like the pictures.
๐Ÿ’ฏ Why There Are Recipe Numbers Missing: Well, it's like this. The recipe numbers are automatically generated by the database, always using a new number for a new recipe. Over the last 20 years many recipes, mostly test recipes, have been added and then deleted, leaving only their memory and their number behind. And there was also a lot of weird stuff going on in the beginning, which messed up the order. In terms of date added, the first one is #6, then #4, #9, #10, #4, #718!!!, #2, and finally #1. Just the way databases and poor programmers work!
