This recipe was on a Thank You card that my sister sent me sometime between 1979 and 1983. See picture below.
Ingredients
5 1/2 - 6 cups sifted flour
1 Tbsp. salt
2 cups milk
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 pkgs dry yeast
1/4 cup lukewarm water
2 cups rolled oats
melted butter
2 TBSP. wheat germ
Directions
Sift 3 cups of the flour with the salt into a large bowl.
Heat milk, butter and brown sugar together until very warm.
Add to the flour mixture and beat until smooth and well blended.
Dissolve yeast in water.
Stir yeast into batter and mix well.
Stir in oats.
Stir in enough additional flour to make a stiff dough.
Turn out on floured board and knead 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic, adding flour as needed.
Place in a greased bowl, brush top with melted butter and sprinkle with wheat germ.
Cover and warm place to rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
Punch down and shape into two loaves.
Place in greased loaf pans and brush top with melted butter.
Let rise again until doubled.
Bake in a preheated 375° oven for about 40 minutes.
Cool on wire rack before slicing.
