Saturday Matinee: Jacob, Niel
Saturday Night: Joseph, Cameron
Sunday Night: Peter, Cameron
Okay.
There is really not a lot more to say about the show, so I will go over some highlights.
Jacob is by far one of the best acting Billys I have seen. I love his timing and his expressions, and I love how into the scene he is, even when he is not the focus, as in Grandma’s Song. This is especially evident when he looks around trying to figure out what Grandma is seeing. A very nice touch.
Jacob is also the only Billy I have noticed looking back at Michael when he says good-bye for the last time.
Joseph is young and still needs some strength, but he does a great job.
The most exciting thing for me was the Sunday evening show, by far the best BETM of the week. It is stunnign to see what six months have done for Peter. He has turned into a great actor – by far the best crying in The Letter – and a very strong dancer. All three of the principle dances – Angry Dance, Swan Lake (dream ballet) and Electricity – were just beautiful. Even his pose during Solidarity was breath-taking. His singing voice is not the greatest, but it is possible that he had a cold. The rest of the performance more than made up for it!
One final not about Billy Elliot. The show is still wonderful to see. I see new things every time. But right now, though all of the Billys are capable dancers, and Peter is really pretty exciting, it seems that the producers are no longer going out of their way to find the best young dancers in the country. I hope that is not the case. Hopefully some of the new Billys coming along will re-ignite the excitement, someone who will be a “must-see” Billy.
