To be honest, I had no clue what this was about. Well, I had a little clue. I knew it was campy. I knew it had to do with Australia. I knew it had something to do with cross-dressing, gay guys. And I knew I did not have a brightly colored feather boa to wear.
What I did not know was how much I would enjoy this spectacular performance. Someone asked me last night what the hi-lite of this trip was. Priscilla was at the top of the list.
Unlike a traditional musical, Priscilla does not have any original songs, but in stead uses just about everyone’s favorite disco music and pop tunes from the 70s, woven into a totally no-brain-strain romp in a spectacular RV bus, as its occupants travel across the Australian outback. Yes, there is a plot, and there is even one or two painfully sad moments. But mostly it is just a shit load of fun and music and dancing and color – LOTS OF COLOR!
The bus alone is just fantastic, The best way to describe it is to tkae your LED TV, enlarge it about 1000 times and then wrap and RV in it. This allows the bus to change colors and to even display animated scenes. The bus alone is worth going to see this show.
And after going through this amazingly wonderful adventure with our three main protagonists – and Bob – you reach the climax of the show, one of the most touchingly, tender moments I have ever seen in a theatrical production, rivaling Billy Elliot’s The Letter for managing to jerk the tears out of you!
Anyway, in my mind this is a “don’t miss” show, especially if you liked that kind of music and lots of lights, sound and colors!
