Christmas is Over!! Finally!

Wednesday, January 14, 2009 — by Uncle Dave — Be The First To Comment On This Post

Yes, you will note that it is January 14th and I am declaring Christmas over!!
This is because today I finally put away all of the decorations, but not without some adventure.
You see, after Christmas this year I bought some new things for next year, among them an inflatible Santa that is 8 feet tall. So before I packed him away for a year I inflated him to make sure he worked, and then when I deflated him I left him on the back patio for several days.
Well, last night, unknown to me, an animal of unknown species (probably a stray cat) decided to mark its ownership of my Santa by, well, scenting it. As I said, I did not know what this wet stuff was until too late, so for the rest of the day I smelled like animal musk. Worse, my Santa does as well. Gross!! Anyway, I finally packed it away and then went in and showered and changed. Luckily, the outdoor Christmas stuff goes in a big tractor barn that smells like oil, diesel fuel and farm chemicals anyway, so hopefully Santa will smell better by next year!!

There are some more Christmas pictures added to the Flickr site.
Oh, look! Pressies!! For me? For me? Hmmm, one of them looks kind of like a saw blade. Wonder if it has a train picture on it.IMG_0806_resizeIMG_0807_resize

Take a trip from the driveway, through the living room and then into the back yard: (more…)

All I Want For Christmas Is The Stuff I Bought

At this point in my life, Christmas is just a time to give stuff, get stuff, get stuffed and go to bed. To be honest, it is more work than play, and I have not been able to really enjoy either the spirituality of the day or the excitement of it in a long, long time.
We have Christmas at my mother’s house, where I happen to live. But a lot of the family comes from somewhere else, so we usually start rumaging through our stockings at about the crack of noon.

We have a rule that we don’t just go into the living room and start digging in. We wait…for everyone!! And then we take turns opening presents so everyone can see. And there are a lot of us. Which means we get done just about in time to eat and go home.

Now, adult family members do not exchange gifts with other adult members unless they are a parent or a child. So I don’t give gifts to my sisters or my adult nieces or nephews – I think 16 is the cut-off age, and no one in the family is within 10 years of that age in either direction. I do give gifts to my mom and my grand nieces and grand nephew. And I get gifts from…well…my mom. (more…)
