Uncle Dave’s Stealth Vacation – New York City: October 17th – 24th, 2011: Part 2

Wednesday, October 19, 2011 — by Uncle Dave — Be The First To Comment On This Post

So, we are on to the rest of Wednesday, October 19th, 2011.

Well, I did not go down to Wall Street. I did find Nat Sherman (Tabac Sherman) and found a very nice lighter for my collection.

Then I went to Billy Elliot, returned ot my hotel room afterwards and ordered a ticket to Jersey Boys for Thursday night. I followed that up with a very nice dinner with Cary, Hugsy and her friend, Elaine, at John’s pizza. Then it was time to split up, as they all had shows planned, and I had no evening plans at all. I stopped by the M&M store to get my traditional Christmas ornament and a mug. I got green this time, in the hopes that this is the color I am missing. (Last trip, I bought an orange one, which I already have; I had a choice of yellow or green, so I am hoping it is green that I need.)

So I am back at the RCA, ready for a quiet evening in, though I am kind of hungry and wondering if an evening trip to Junior’s for cheesecake is in order. Hmmmmm?

So I am signing off for Wednesday!

Review: BETM Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

Wednesday, October 19, 2011 — by Uncle Dave — Be The First To Comment On This Post

Billy: Peter; Michael: Cameron; Tall Boy: Myles

I am not going to get into individual performances. I have reviewed Cameron and Peter before. Both of them are very strong and very good.

Oh, also, the more I see the new Tony, the more I like him. Great acting and good singing voice.

And I am getting into the new Dad. I take back what I said about him not looking like a miner. What does a miner look like?

So, the more I see the show this time, the more I like all of the subtle changes.

I like when Tony finally yells “Open it!” and then says “Sorry!”. Very funny.

In fact, the whole letter scene between Dad and Grandma and Tony is really funny.

I dunno. Everything kind of blurs after a while.

But I will say it, to me, is a fresh new show. I like change, and nothing has been changed for the worse. And there are a lot of things changed for the better.

That is all for this show unless I think of something else.

Review: BETM Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

Wednesday, October 19, 2011 — by Uncle Dave — Add Your Comment - Read What Others Have Said

Tuesday, 10/18/11 – Billy: Giuseppe; Michael: Jack; Tall Boy: Joseph H.

Seeing BETM with all of the new cast was like seeing an entirely new show. Except for our old friend, Thommie, I didn’t recognize anyone!
First of all, I find the script changes removing a couple of f-bombs to be totally silly. Tonight, Billy said “I really don’t know” or something like that, and later he said “Flippppin’ hell!”. But except for those changes, the f-bomb was prevalent, especially from Michael. It is weird that they made these changes.

Uncle Dave’s Stealth Vacation – New York City: October 17th – 24th, 2011: Part 1

Well, once again I am doing a big Billython in NYC. This was kind of a last minute decision, kept under the radar.
On Monday night, I did the usual overnight stay at the El Rancho in Milbrae, where I had a nice dinner with my niece, Amy.

Tuesday morning I was up at 3:30 andoff to the airport at 4:30 for my 7:15 flight, which went fine except that I didn’t get my usual business class upgrade. Still the flight was fine and as usual with United, we arrived early and by 4 PM I was on my way into Manhattan.
Well, I have to say that there were several moments when I was pretty sure I was not going to make it into Manhattan, as my driver was busy using his phone and something else, while narrowly avoiding rear-ending the car in front of us, at one point swerving into a thankfully empty lane to avoid doing so.
Checked in at The Fire Trap Hotel (aka Radio City Apartments). Actually got a pretty decent room for a change, on the street like I like it. Yeah, it’s a bit smokey, but a can of Lysol spray does the trick!
Had too much dinner at Dallas BBQ – their sticky sings are the bomb! And then made a quick decision to see Billy because I had not seen Giuseppe. And after the show I met Hugsy2k for desert at Juniors.
When I went to bed on Tuesday night, it was a lovely pleasant evening.

Billy Elliot, the Musical – a combined review of 6 shows (Broadway)

Friday, May 29, 2009 — by Uncle Dave — Be The First To Comment On This Post

6 shows – May 20th – 24th, 2009
Billys – David, Kiril, Tanner, David, Kiril, Trent
Michael – David B. was Michael all 6 shows

As some of you may recall from my London review,  I have neither the time nor the patience to write 6 reviews, so I will do what I did last time, going over the show scene by scene. And I am not going to shy away from the negatives, so if you want a review that says everything was perfect, go away. ;)
Also, there are some spoilers here!

Les Mistake

Thursday, November 27, 2008 — by Uncle Dave — Be The First To Comment On This Post

Before I went to London, so many people bugged me about only seeing the same play 7 times that I ended up booking Les Mis for my first night there.
Now known as “Les Mistake”.
1) If I had left the night open, I would have prolly picked up a box office ticket for Billy and then I would have seen Layton!!
2) I own 4 Les Mis Cast Recordings, and quite frankly, once you have listened to those a few times, you know the whole show, as there are no spoken parts.
3) The dinner I had before the show sucked, and I would probably not have booked Rainforest Cafe if I had not been going to see the show nearby.

London – October 5th – 13th, 2008

Thursday, November 20, 2008 — by Uncle Dave — Be The First To Comment On This Post

At the risk of sounding just a bit too dramatic, it is nearly impossible to describe the beauty of the moment on Monday morning as our plane came in over the north of Great Britain and the sun was rising in the east, a beautiful sunrise, a magnificent welcome the England. As I sat in my window seat all I could think was that it was finally true, confirmed a few moments later when we actually landed without dying. (more…)
