Potato Chips (known as Crisps in some parts of the world)

Tuesday, December 30, 2008 — by Uncle Dave — Be The First To Comment On This Post

When I was young, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, potato chips were decidedly imperfect, which made them perfect! You see, kiddies, there was a time when potato chips were made by slicing potatoes, dropping them in hot oil, draining and salting them, and tossing them into a bag. If the potato was a bit blemished going in, it was blemished coming out. And sometimes a thin edge of the potato might get a little more browned compared to the rest of the potato, and that was okay, too. They tasted wonderful, with all those little imperfections adding myriad variations in flavor. In college, I used to buy the cheapest potato chips I could find, Golden Bear, which I think were culled out of the “other” potato chips because they had imperfections, brown spots and holes and such. They were glorious, as I recall.
But somewhere in time, manufacturers found ways to take the imperfection out of potato chips. No variations, no overcooked spots, no blemishes. Just one potato chip looking just like the last one, Pringles and the like being the worst, abominable chips which appear to be formed or pressed out of some kind of potato mash before being fried, so that they all are EXACTLY the same. What a shame!!!
But joy of joys, this past year I discovered Kettle Chips, potato chips made the old fashioned way, imperfections and all. They are wonderful, and almost as good as the old kind. (I have left out the part where good ol’ hips used to be fried in animal fats, which made them even better.)
So I love Kettle Chips, and I was especially amazed to discover them in Sainsbury’s in London!! I love ENGLAND!!! LOL

SKOR Toffee Bits vs. Heath Bits o’ Brickle

Thursday, December 25, 2008 — by Uncle Dave — Be The First To Comment On This Post

Those of you who have visisted the recipe section might have come across Uncle Dave’s Husky Treats. In that recipe I mention that one can use home made toffee bits or SKOR toffee bits (which can be gotten here, in bulk), but NEVER Heath Bits o’ Brickle.
Oddly enough, SKOR and Heath candy bars are both made by Hershey, and they sell the hard candy part – what they call toffee – in broken up bits for baking. SKOR toffee bits, however, are much darker and have a richer, deeper flavour than the Heath crap. You are better off following my recipe for toffee and making your own if you don’t want to buy the SKOR bits in 3lb lots from the above link.
Anyway, I do wish Hershey would sell the SKOR bits in stores again!!!!

Oh, look! Pressies!! For me? For me? Hmmm, one of them looks kind of like a saw blade. Wonder if it has a train picture on it.IMG_0806_resizeIMG_0807_resize

All I Want For Christmas Is The Stuff I Bought

Wednesday, December 17, 2008 — by Uncle Dave — Add Your Comment - Read What Others Have Said - 2 Comments

At this point in my life, Christmas is just a time to give stuff, get stuff, get stuffed and go to bed. To be honest, it is more work than play, and I have not been able to really enjoy either the spirituality of the day or the excitement of it in a long, long time.
We have Christmas at my mother’s house, where I happen to live. But a lot of the family comes from somewhere else, so we usually start rumaging through our stockings at about the crack of noon.

We have a rule that we don’t just go into the living room and start digging in. We wait…for everyone!! And then we take turns opening presents so everyone can see. And there are a lot of us. Which means we get done just about in time to eat and go home.

Now, adult family members do not exchange gifts with other adult members unless they are a parent or a child. So I don’t give gifts to my sisters or my adult nieces or nephews – I think 16 is the cut-off age, and no one in the family is within 10 years of that age in either direction. I do give gifts to my mom and my grand nieces and grand nephew. And I get gifts from…well…my mom. (more…)

Blue LEDs

Tuesday, December 9, 2008 — by Uncle Dave — Add Your Comment - Read What Others Have Said

The person who decided that blue LEDs would be really cool to put on electronic devices should be killed!!!
Yeah, they look really good in the daytime when you are using the stuff, but at night, when you want to go to sleep, they are annoying as hell!
My computer is in my bedroom, and I never turn my computer off, a holdover from when turning it off was actually hard on it.
So the front of my computer has a blue led temperature guage which I long ago covered with tape. But then the power light on my speakers, the power light on my printer and some other button on my printer all have blue LEDs also, and I really can’t cover them and I do not want to turn them off.
Now, there are literally dozens of red and green LEDs in my room that are on all the time, and they do not bother me, but those fucking blue ones drive me nuts!!!!

Santa and his friends. BTW, this is a very old set, more than 50 years. Originally part of an advertising program. Santa may have had a Coke in his hand at one time. If you watch the opening scenes of the movie “Pearl Harbor”, they pan across a lawn where there is almost an identical Santa figure. Even though our back yard has a fence with locked gates, I still chain him to the fence for security!

Christmas Inflatable Takes a Swim

Wednesday, December 3, 2008 — by Uncle Dave — Add Your Comment - Read What Others Have Said - 2 Comments

So we have these big outdoor inflatable Christmas decorations. One is this huge carousel, about 7′ tall and about 8′ diameter. Another is a 12′ long and 6′ high thing with a Christmas tree, a polar bear, a penguin sitting on an igloo, and a snowman – this scene has lights that flicker in time to the Christmas music it plays. Another is just a short thing, about 4′ tall, and it is two penguins revolving around and around. (more…)
